Burnley Weavers’ Triangle land is sold
Burnley councillors have agreed to sell the council’s interest in a small piece of land in the Weavers’ Triangle to allow an electricity sub-station to be built.
The sub-station will provide power to the new University Technical College, work on which is due to begin shortly following a recent decision by Burnley Borough Council to grant planning permission.
The council’s Executive agreed to grant a 125-year lease on the 18sq.m. site next to Victoria Mill, Trafalgar Street. The site has been agreed by Electricity North West and by Barnfield Construction which is developing the new college in Victoria Mill.
Burnley Council leader Coun. Julie Cooper said: “This is a matter of the council’s new administration confirming the authority’s commitment to the development of the UTC and the wider regeneration of the Weavers’ Triangle.
“The UTC is vitally important to Burnley and it was crucial that we take this relatively simple step to help it become a reality. The UTC will benefit Burnley’s economy and support its young people in particular.”
The £9.3m. college will provide technical studies for students aged 14 to 19 through Visions Learning Trust, supported by the lead sponsor Training 2000, Burnley businesses and the university sponsors UCLan and Liverpool John Moores University.
