1,700 apply for jobs at Tesco store opening in Padiham next week
A TOTAL of 1,700 would-be workers have applied for jobs at the new Tesco superstore due to open in Padiham.
Store manager Bill Davidson has already recruited 152 people after 551 interviews, and still has some positions to fill.
The remaining jobs are part-time, ranging from 10 to 18 hours a week.
Some are temporary and others want 24-hour flexible working. Most of the 30 available involve evening, night or weekend work.
The store, in Wyre Street, will open on Thursday, October 11th.
Many of the full and part-time new recruits are training at nearby stores.
Tesco have not released details about the future of their Tesco Express store nearby in Burnley Road, and will not respond to speculation that it is to become a petrol station.
New store manager Mr Davidson has worked for the company for 28 years.
He said: “I have worked in many stores across the North- West region. Now, I am very much looking forward to working within Padiham and getting to know the local community.
“We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the response from our recruitment drive.”
Work on the store has been ongoing for the past year after a whole swathe of historic mills and other firms along Lune Street, Sowerby Street and Wyre Street were demolished to make way for it.
Tesco received approval for the Padiham store after a long planning battle which resulted in a four-day public inquiry in 2010. There was initially huge opposition from independent traders in Padiham.
