A BURNLEY man found dead in a snow drift near a remote village has been named.

The body of Gary Windle was discovered by a farmer in Shay Lane, Briercliffe, yesterday afternoon.

Police believe the 25-year-old has been on his way home from a night out with friends when he was caught out in the extreme weather conditions.

Chief Insp. Derry Crorken said investigations were underway to establish exactly what happened to Mr Windle.

He said: “Early indications suggest that it appears to be a very tragic incident where a young man has been out with friends and has become caught up in the weather on his journey home.”

Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Windle’s death.

Officers attended the scene yesterday and the air ambulance was called to take the body to the Royal Blackburn Hospital as the area was too difficult to access for vehicles because of the snow.

A post mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death.
