MEETING – The committee of the Briercliffe Society met at the home of Coun. Pauline Frost-Hardwick on Monday. Attending were Roger Frost (chairman), John and Carol Bentley, Stephanie Sutcliffe and Barbara Holsgrove. The committee welcomed new member Gwen Farmer, who has been a member of the society for some years. The treasurer was asked to send a cheque for £50 to the parish council towards its Christmas parcels for the elderly scheme.
The committee discussed the programme for the coming year, decided to participate in the 150th anniversary exhibition celebrating the creation of the borough in October at St Peter’s and it will participate in the September Heritage Weekend with an organised walk within the parish. The society will also put together a small exhibition in May to mark the re-opening of Briercliffe Library after refurbishment.
The society will organise trips for members and friends to the 2011 productions of the Burnley Light Opera Society. The June Trail will be a canal trip with a difference. Mr Frost reported on the activities of the Local History Group. The attendance was very good at a talk given by Roger Frost on the history of shops and shopping in Briercliffe. There will be another talk at the end of the month.
COMMUNITY CENTRE – The next meeting of the committee of Briercliffe Community Centre Association will take place at the Jubilee Street centre on Monday at 7-30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
BRIERCLIFFE SOCIETY – The next meeting of the Briercliffe Society will be held at the community centre in Jubilee Street on Monday, February 14th, when Carol Stinton of Padiham will be the guest speaker. Mrs Stinton, who recently appeared on “Come Dine With Me”, is a former member of Burnley Council, is Mayoress of Padiham and has worked as a guide at Towneley Hall. Entrance is £1 which includes refreshments.
BIBLE STUDY – Haggate Baptist Church is to start a new series of Bible studies based on the book of James. The course will be at 7-30 p.m. on Thursdays at Haggate Baptist Church and will be led by the Rev. Roger Green.
PARENTS AND TOTS – A parents and tots group will be held every Friday at 10 a.m. at Haggate Baptist Church in Burnley Road. Tel: Rosemary Hands on 831886.
FANTASIC FRIDAYS – The Fantastic Fridays meets every Friday at Haggate Baptist Church at 6-30 p.m. The group is open to children up to the age of 11. Tel: Claire Sweetman on 451765.
COACH TRIP – St James’s Briercliffe Social Outreach Committee has organised a coach trip to York on Saturday, April 2nd. The trip will leave the church at 8-30 a.m. and return at 5 p.m. The tickets are £7 and to book put your name on the noticeboard in church or contact Janet Large on 438925.
CHURCH CHOIR – St James’s Church Choir will be serving jacket potatoes with various fillings after the 10-15 a.m. service in the vestry on Sunday, February 13th. Tickets are £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children. Tickets are available from Edith Driver and choir members.
