The annual bonfire registration scheme has been launched in Burnley.

The scheme is aimed at people and organisations holding fires on public land across the borough in the run-up to and on Bonfire Night.

The registration scheme has been successful in cutting the number of call-outs by the fire service to “nuisance” fires during its busiest time of the year.

Anyone organising a bonfire on public land is urged to register their event. In return they will get professional support to help make sure the event goes safely and no-one is injured. This includes a site inspection by fire officers and expert advice on fire and firework safety.

Fires must be registered by 5pm on Monday, October 31st. Any unregistered bonfires built on public land face being cleared.

Burnley Council is working with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services, Lancashire Police, Calico housing association and other partners to help ensure the period around November 5th is enjoyable, but safe for everyone.

The council’s Executive member for community services, Coun. Lian Pate, said: “The bonfire registration scheme has helped cut the number of call outs for the fire service to deal with fires from 126 in 2007 to just three last year. It has also helped ensure that the bonfires hosted in Burnley are safe for all.

“It means firefighters are available to deal with more serious incidents.

“It’s been so successful that people have been coming forward to register even before the scheme was officially launched, which shows it’s valued and appreciated.”
