81% of local hospital patients’ pleased with their care

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has continued to show improvement with 81% of inpatients rating their care good or outstanding in the latest NHS Inpatient Survey.

The anonymous survey, carried out by the Picker Institute, saw 491 inpatients rate their experience of care and treatment at the Trust’s five hospitals last July.

The results reveal the Trust was rated highly in areas including:

• 97% of patients said their hospital room or ward was clean;

• 95% said toilets and bathrooms were clean;

• 83% say they were treated with respect and dignity;

• 79% had confidence and trust in hospital staff.

However, the Trust rated poorly regarding patients’ views on the quality of their care and on being given information on how to complain about care recieived.

Patients rated the Trust significantly better than the national average for single sex sleeping areas and bathing facilities; noise at night from patients; the cleanliness of ward toilets and discharge planning with other health and/or social services.

Kevin McGee, Trust cheief executive, said: “I am satisfied with the results of the survey which show that, as an organisation whose aim is to provide safe, personal and effective care to patients, we continue heading in the right direction.

“However, we are not complacent and the results have been reviewed by the Board and action plans given to our wards.

“We are very open about areas which require improvement and have already recruited specialist housekeepers to ensure better nutrition, adjusted the discharge process and improved monitoring of patients to more quickly identify any in pain.

“Overall the results are encouraging and staff should be proud of their hard work which is reflected in what patients are telling us.”
