AN 80-year-old woman came face to face with a burglar in her own home in the early hours of Sunday.
The offender searched the house in Edward Street, Nelson, before going upstairs, where his flashlight woke the householder. She saw the man snatch her gold handbag from the side of her bed and then leave.

The bag contained a purse with £50 in cash, bank cards and store loyalty cards, as well as two keys and a diary.

The raider is described as being a white male, between 5ft. 4in. and 5ft. 8in. tall, wearing a dark-coloured jacket. The incident occurred at 3-30 a.m.

Insp. Russ Procter said: "Extensive inquiries are being made as this has been a terrifying ordeal for an elderly woman. We are looking for information on who that man may be as it is not often this kind of thing happens."

Anyone who has information should contact Pennine Police on 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
