HUNDREDS of protestors staged a peaceful march from Daneshouse to Burnley Police Station today - in a bid to get answers about the death of Nadeem Khan in police custody.
A week ago, the 28-year-old was arrested following a "violent struggle" with police. He was later taken ill at Burnley Police Station and taken to Burnley General Hospital where he died. An investigation has been launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
His family, including his mother Brenda who is suffering from cancer and who signed herself out of hospital, walked from Abel Street along Colne Road, Church Street and Croft Street to Parker Lane. Their march was quiet and peaceful, but there were scores of banners protesting Mr Khan's death.
Once at the police station, the family's spokesman, Coun. Wajid Khan, read out a list of questions to Supt Neil Smith, who read out a joint Lancashire Constabulary and IPCC statement. Family and friends then laid flowers in memory of Mr Khan on the steps of the police station.
Afterwards, organiser Mr Shiraz Khan, Mr Khan's cousin, said: "We feel that we have achieved what we set out to achieve. But this is just the start. We won't let this be brushed under the carpet. We won't rest until we have justice."
