THE James Braid Open Singles at Clitheroe Golf Club attracted a field of over 200 golfers from across the region, and the event produced some remarkable scores on the Blue Course.
Clitheroe's Martin Cane was firing on all cylinders as he produced six birdies in his round of 66 to walk away with the Southworth Scratch Trophy with a winning margin of six shots.
Mark Ashworth could not match Cane on the day, but coming back in a two-under 34 gave him the edge in a three card play-off for second.
G. Rees from Fleetwood was the only exception to a Clitheroe clean sweep as he took third prize from the home club's young star Andrew Heesom with the same 72. Dave Wilson produced a solid 73 to take fifth place.
The Holgate Nett Trophy resulted in a card play-off between Burnley's Andy Riley and Paul Biggins from Accrington with nett 68s.
Clitheroe's Paul Nightingale picked up a nice prize with his nett 70 in third, then David Knowles edged David Durant out of fourth after cards, both returning nett 71s.
Ashworth provided the headline again on Sunday when a hole in one on the par three 14th helped Ashworth and playing partner Granville Pilling to a winning 43 points in the fourball stableford.
The Hamers, Chris and Paul, had to settle for second place after a three card play-off with the winners and the Garry Speak-Mike Tattersall combination, who had to settle for third.
The Seniors stableford, played in trying conditions, was a triumph for Lord Brian Stokes with an impressive 40 points. Two shots off his handicap was just reward for his win by an eight-shot margin over Keith Pedder and third-placed Ian Lambert.
Senior open fourballs usually attract a full house, and last Tuesday's event was no exception.
A total of 45 points proved to be the winning tally for St Annes Old Links couple D. Quigley and M. Farrer. Turton J. Holt and B. West took second with 43 points as golfers from Hurlston and Windermere took the minor prizes.
It took two of Clitheroe's more experienced seniors to wave the home flag when David Heesom and Denis Greenup took the best gross.
