Paul's tight battle to win Nelson Trophy
NELSON golfer Paul Thomason won a five-way card play-off to land the Nelson Trophy on home soil on Sunday.
Five players returned 36-hole nett scores of 134 to share top spot.
But Thomason, with rounds of 71 and 63, landed the club's oldest major open competition.
Second place went to Michael Anderson with rounds of 68 and 66 and Martin Fraser was third after two 67s – leaving Alan Dugdale and David Bertram as the unlucky players to miss out.
Craig Fort recovered from a first round 74 to score a five-under par 65 and land the gross prize by a shot from Daniel Nutter.
The best morning round was returned by defending champion Ryan Curwen (65) and former Nelson member Jonathon Whalley (Haydock) won the prize for the best afternoon round with a nett 63 after a card play-off with Elliot Frost.
And Peter Howarth highlighted his second round with a hole-in-one at the par-three 11th.
