NICK Uttley created Nelson Golf Club history on Wednesday by claiming the Club Championship for the TENTH time!
He had things pretty much his own way in the final, as he beat Steve Brunton 6 and 5 to take the title.
And that now moves him one clear of the nine titles earned by Harry Proctor in the 1930s and 1940s.
Uttley first won the title in 1989 and he had a stranglehold on it for much of the 1990s.
He equalled Proctor's record in 2003.
And on Wednesday he ended his wait for the outright lead.
Birdies at two of the first three holes gave Uttley a three-hole lead.
Brunton made a birdie of his own on the fifth to trim Uttley's advantage, but by the turn the former Lancashire county player was 4-up and he extended that lead on the 10th.
The 11th hole was halved in par, but when Uttley birdied the long 12th and got up and down for par on the 13th, the title was his.
Uttley reached the final the hard way, needing extra holes to see off Tony Flanagan in the quarter-finals and defending Club Champion Craig Fort in the semis.
Brunton closed out both his games on the final green.
Having set an early lead in his quarter-final, he watched a perfect four-iron from opponent Steve Duerden find the cup for a hole-in-one on the sixth.
The following night he saw off Daniel Nutter, also on the final green.
Nutter qualified for the last four by beating Paul Thomason 5 and 3 on Monday night as Fort accounted for Ian Short on the 13th hole.
The top eight qualified through the 36-hole Briercliffe Trophy on Saturday which saw Fort repeat his win of 2007 with a 141 total. Nutter was runner-up one shot behind.
The Wilkinson Trophy, the 36-hole nett event, was won by Brunton (136) by two shots from junior member Marc Arnold.
