THE team from Burnley Golf Club came close to qualifying for the finals of the British Captain's Tournament when they played their qualifying round at Leeds Golf Club on Tuesday.
Returning a score of 68 points, they were seventh to the eventual winners, Pannal Golf Club from Harrogate.

The format of the tournament requires the captain to score on every hole, with the team selecting their best score to add to that of the captain.

The Burnley Golf Club team – captain Alan Green, vice-captain Terry Walne, 2007 captain Andy Birbeck and 2006 captain Dave Holland – have, however, qualified for the 2009 Tournament and so will have another chance for glory next year in the event sponsored by Monarch Events and Link Events.

Holland was in the prizes at the Clifford Hopwood Memorial Flag competition on Saturday which raised money for the Pendleside Hospice in memory of the captain.

He was in the winning team alongside Paul Marsden, Steve Riley and Dave Thornback.

They returned 91 points to win by one from the team of Lloyd Lewis, Sid Harrison, Keith Cheetham and Neil Holt.
