OSCARS: Burnley firm in running for Hollywood awards

OSCAR glory is coming to Britain today all the way from Hollywood to Burnley.

Bosses and staff at a Burnley sound engineering business are preparing to celebrate after box office blockbusters including “Les Miserables”, “Life of Pi”, “Skyfall” and “Argo” are set to pick up Oscars in a host of categories.

These and other top films have all had their soundtracks created on equipment developed by Mark Crabtree at his world-leading company AMS Neve which has already enjoyed a clean sweep at the recent Golden Globes. 100% of all winning film soundtracks were recorded using the kit Mark first invented 40 year ago.

Now the Oscars look set to provide further cause for celebration as five of the seven nominations for the coveted Best Picture award, all five nominations for the Best original score and all nominations for Best animated film had their sound engineered on AMS Neve desks.

“Yes, it is fair to say rather more people know about us in Hollywood now than they do in Burnley,” said Mark. “Our congratulations go out to all the exceptional talent winning and being nominated for these glittering prizes. All our staff and engineers are really proud and excited to be able to feature in this internationally-recognised festive arena and to see Britain and, of course, Burnley, playing such a dominant part in the creation of these iconic films.”

It’s from a factory on a business park in Burnley that managing director Mark and his team have already won two Oscars, an Emmy and a Grammy after engineers used their giant consoles to complete the soundtracks for most of the biggest blockbuster films of recent years including “Avatar”, “The King’s Speech” and “Titanic”. Even the hit theme song to “Skyfall”, performed by pop superstar Adele, was produced on one of Mark’s studio consoles and the most famous recording artists in the world have used his ground-breaking kit.

Hollywood moguls and stars of the music business including Peter Gabriel and Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler regularly beat a path to the firm’s Burnley headquarters.
