FAMILY: Burnley girl’s cancer charity weekend in memory of gran

A THOUGHTFUL young Burnley girl is marking what would have been her grandma’s 69th birthday with a special charity weekend.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Sophia Flanagan (15) and her dad Sean will embark on a 20-mile bike ride before hosting a music event at Haslingden Cricket Club the day after, all in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Sophia’s grandma, whose birthday would be this Saturday, died from Leukaemia last July while her grandad died from multiple myeloma two-and-a-half years ago.

“I started organising it before Christmas,” said Sophia, who lives in Lower Manor Lane. “I thought it would be nice to do it in memory of my nana and on the weekend of what would have been her birthday. We’ve raised around £100 so far but I’m hoping to get around £200.”

The Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School pupil and her dad will set off from Lower Manor Lane and cyle around Burnley, Pendle and Padiham before finishing back at their home.

The music event will feature a host of bands and solo acts and will run from 1pm until 5pm.

Mr Flanagan said: “She came up with the idea to do something on her birthday to remember her by. She was very attached to her grandparents and took both deaths badly. I’m hoping what she is doing will be a positive note for her to remember them by. Dave at Haslingden Cricket Club let her have the venue for free and the music equipment is on loan from Pro Solo in Burnley so we would like to thank them.”
