THE first ever Burnley Canal Festival has been hailed a success by organisers after hundreds of families turned out to a weekend full of activities to celebrate the heritage of the town’s waterways.

The event saw 50 boats moored between the Burnley Wharf and Sandygate Square and huge demand meant some people wanting to go on canal boat trips had to be turned away.

Some of the most popular features of the two-day festival included the boat trips, outdoor cinema in Sandygate Square, live music at the Inn on the Wharf pub, tours of Sandygate Mill, canoeing, and demonstrations at the Weavers’ Triangle Visitor Centre.

Organisers at the Canal and River Trust said the event, which was financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will make a return to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal next year.

Emma Bartlet, canal communities officer for Burnley, said: “It went exceptionally well. The feedback we’ve had has been very positive, people would like it to happen annually. They really enjoyed it and learned more about the canal.

“I just want to say a really big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out across the two days. They made it a real success.

“I’d also like to thank all the people who came along.”
