WHILE most students were relaxing over the summer holidays, two Burnley teenagers were performing in the theatre of dreams.

Lisa-Marie Ashworth and Sophie Dand, of Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, spent a spellbinding two weeks as members of the National Theatre of Great Britain.

The aspiring young actresses won places with the prestigious company after beating off competition from 5,000 hopefuls during a gruelling audition process.

Working alongside 300 other young people from Rose Bruford College in London, they rehearsed a piece of theatre which was performed at the celebrated Royal National Theatre on the South Bank.

The pair, who study drama and theatre studies and performing arts, hope the experience will help them on their way to glittering careers in theatre.

Sophie said: “It was the most amazing two weeks of my life – not just from a theatrical point of but also as a life experience”.

Lisa-Marie added: “We completed 10 to 12 hours of hard physical work every day but because it was so much fun the time just flew by. I came back battered, bruised and exhausted but even more determined to follow my dream of a career in the theatre”.

Having completed the course, the girls now join fellow Thomas Whitham student Jack Herbert as full members of The National Youth Theatre.

This will allow them to take part in future NYT productions. The NYT will also act as their agents and hopefully open doors to new acting opportunities.
