Double win sees Belvedere as early leaders
BELVEDERE are the early leaders of the Veka Ribblesdale Cricket League First Division after two comfortable victories over the weekend.
On Saturday, Clitheroe were the visitors, were asked to bat and Ian Cronshaw put in a huge effort by bowling 21 overs, with 6-33 as a reward.
A feature was the metronomic line and length which, allied with variable bounce, made him difficult to score off.
Mick Dewhurst had threatened, but James Young trapped him leg-before.
Ajmal Choudhry also grabbed his first two wickets for the club as Clitheroe posted 94-9.
Paul Garaghty was caught behind for one, and then Dan Young and Choudhry both got started and got out for 18 and 16 respectively.
John Waite made 14 before he holed out. James Young and Nathan Flynn, however, were both unbeaten at the end, Young's 21 including three sixes, and Flynn showing admirable composure with his 15.
On Sunday, play started late, with six overs lost to each side.
Mick Ennis won the toss and started with the spin of Choudhry and James Young, which looked the correct decision as each bowler had two wickets as Stacksteads teetered on 17-4.
However, Matt Burke and Adam Smith are no mugs with the bat and they put on 70 before Burke was caught by John Walker off Young, and the brakes were put back on, the Valleymen closing on 112-6.
Dan Young fell for 12, and Garaghty and Choudhry initially were content to keep up with the run rate, but after 20 overs of careful watchfulness, Choudhry let loose, hitting a string of boundaries in his undefeated 60, and Garaghty's 33 not out saw them home by nine wickets with 12 overs to spare.
The seconds played their first game at Cherry Tree, and all the bowlers chipped in to bowl out the Blackburn outfit for 145. Liam Bond took three and Abdul Shakoor mopped up the tail taking 4-1.
Mohammed Nawaz led the reply, striking 44, and Mark Perry's patient 37 proved to be the backbone of the innings as the winning runs were scored with three wickets to spare.
Ribblesdale Wanderers were the visitors on Sunday.
The Sunday games involving Belvedere were the only ones in the Ribblesdale League to be played.
In the game itself, Ribblesdale got off to a sedate start but the second half of the innings saw pyrotechnics from Lloyd as they amassed 169-6. Mark Perry's 51 was again the backbone of the reply, but the seconds closed on 122-7, picking up two points in defeat.
