Cash starved cricket club needs help to stay afloat
MEMBERS were made aware of Padiham Cricket Club's financial plight at an extraordinary meeting held at the Arbories.
People attending were told why the town can't afford to lose one of its sports clubs, and ideas on how to solve the situation were put forward.
Chairman Steve Mehhan opened the meeting, and stated that Padiham are in debt to the tune of £1,567.12, which was of prime concern to the committee.
Brian Shirtcliffe appealed to the Friends of Padiham Cricket Club to help to keep the club afloat.
He suggested maybe playing without a professional, as this is the club's biggest financial burden, or for a number of members to donate £100 each in exchange for four years' membership.
Grants to Padiham Life and two substantial applications for grants elsewhere have proven fruitless, while Padiham Sports Club member Alan Smith, of which the cricket club is a part, suggested a review of the playing structure may help.
Smith asked whether the club needed three senior teams, and suggested splitting the junior section in order to obtain more aid.
He also explained that the 100 Club would only be a short-term problem-solving exercise, and that the debt isn't very much and the club needs a positive attitude.
Sponsorship was also discussed and the club has agreed, subject to confirmation, that a change to Coors Brewery would be advantageous, as there is sponsorship involved in the deal.
Looking ahead to the new season, Padiham need a first and second team scorer. It is a paid position and anyone interested is asked to contact Brian Shirtcliffe (774291).
There will be a first team friendly at Garstang, where former Padiham skipper Pankaj Tripathi now plays, on Sunday, April 6th.
The annual general meeting of the Burnley Midweek Cricket League will take place on Monday, March 31st, at the Burnley League Club.
Starting at 7 p.m., all teams must be represented and umpires are welcome.
