A FIFTH consecutive victory helped Belvedere pull 14 points clear at the top of the Veka Ribblesdale League First Division.

They travelled to Read where Pete Haworth and Sam Marsh made a steady start and at 76-0 at drinks, the home side were on course for a large total.

However, Haworth took one chance too many and was dismissed for 39.
Marsh passed 50, but a late rattle of wickets, four for Ajmal Chaudhry and three for James Young, saw Read on 161-8.

This score looked even more promising when Belvedere collapsed to 16-3, but Chaudhry and John Waite set about rebuilding the innings.

Ajmal's late cutting was delightful, and the chirpiness that had been a feature to the Read fielding display subsided as the boundary was crossed with increasing regularity.

Chaudhry passed 50 for the third successive game, and the score had passed 100 when Waite chased a wide one and was out for 21.

Getty Schinkel proved a willing ally for Chaudhry and the target was reached with 10 overs to spare.

Chaudhry finished unbeaten on 88, while Schinkel's little cameo resulted in 14.

The second string's season is back on track after a nail-biting last-over win over Great Harwood.

The game was interrupted by heavy rain, and Harwood closed on 147-5.

Paul Perry fell early, Nawaz had a typically breezy 27 before he was castled, and Wasim Gulsar also departed.

But Immy Akhtar and Karim Gore showed completely different approaches and saw the team to within 25 runs of victory, before Gore's dismissal for 17 saw the domino effect come into play, and four more wickets fell before the last over began, with just two wickets left and three runs required.

Immy smashed another six to finish unbeaten on 74.
