NEIGHBOURS living near the former McBride’s factory in Burnley are fighting a plan to turn part of the building into a waste factory.

Businessman Asjad Mohammed, of Mayfair Developments (MCR) Ltd, wants to use a unit in Britannia Mill in Ruskin Street as a waste transfer station where waste paper, plastic and cardboard will be sorted and stored before being shipped to other businesses.

In his application for permission from Lancashire County Council Mr Mohammed, who operates from a registered office in Walter Street, Brierfield, says the plant will sort and bale waste from 8am until 8pm six days a week and that 20 tonnes of trade effluent will be produced each month.

Neighbours say the proposal will make their lives a misery, and complain that they had 20 years of noise and disruption from the McBride’s plant which grew to be the company’s busiest site.

They say if the firm is given the go ahead families face the prospect of heavy wagons and skips on the streets, the risk of fire from combustible paper and plastic, drains being blocked by paper pulp, noisy machinery and litter from debris.

The neighbours been told they have until Monday to make any comments.

People from Blacker Street, Keswick Road, Lindale Crescent and Kyan Street all strongly objected to the plan and Mr and Mrs David and Catherine Heslop gathered petition.

Said Mr Heslop: “It will bring noise, traffic and disruption, and it is very distressing for everyone living in the area.

“We all feel that this simply is not the right place. An operation like that belongs on an industrial estate. The county council has just opened a recycling centre at Widow Hill, it should be near there.
