A MUSIC teacher who inspired children across East Lancashire and beyond was presented with gifts and cards by pupils at a village primary school as he marked his retirement.

Mr Malcolm Spencer has worked at Simonstone Primary School for the past 10 years and, until recently, worked for Lancashire Music Service for many years after beginning his teaching career in Manchester.

During his time in Simonstone, Mr Spencer, who lives near Settle, North Yorkshire, directed and produced shows such as “My Fair Lady”, “Cats”, “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Sound of Music”, inspiring a generation of children to take up music.

Pupils, staff and governors at the school presented him with cards and jewellery shop vouchers to put towards a new watch as well as an “Oscar” for his years of dedication to the school.

Assistant headteacher at the school Mrs Christine Smith said: “Mr Spencer is extremely well respected and admired by the children. He was able to get the best out of them.

“A number of the children were upset that he is leaving.”

Mr Spencer plans to do more travelling and walking in his retirement.
