Plan to demolish Burnley mill and build new homes

A FORMER Burnley cotton mill could be bulldozed to make way for new houses.

There are plans to flatten Queen’s Mill to make way for 18 new affordable homes on the site in New Hall Street.

The Victorian-era mill, which was build during the 1880s, is currently used as a storage unit for a manufacturing firm.

But developers Great Places Housing will be able to redevelop the site if the proposals are given the green light by Burnley Council’s Development Control Committee on Wednesday night.

Two, three and four bedroom homes with private rear gardens and parking spaces could be constructed on the site which borders Cameron Street and Elm Street.

Outline planning permission for 15 new homes had been granted on the site in February 2008 but the permission was not implemented by developers and lapsed in 2011.

But if the latest application is granted, the plans would see the mill completely demolished along with an existing sub-station to make way for the 18 new homes.

Planning consent was also given for 12 new homes at Livingstone Mill in Elm Street last March to Oriental Developments.

A further outline application for residential developments granted for nearby Cameron Mill in Howsin Street has now lapsed.
