PADIHAM Sports Week kicked off in spectacular style at the weekend with an Olympic Extravaganza, walk along the Greenway and the annual Mayor’s Mile fun run.
The two events marked the start of the annual sports week and festival of fun which includes a wealth of sporting activities for people in the town.
A Sir Chris Hoy-themed cycling challenge and a Zumbathon were just some of the activities at Padiham Leisure Centre while 35 people of all ages took part in the Mayor’s Mile on the greenway, led by Mayor of Padiham Coun. Alan Ravenscroft, which raises money for Padiham Community Fund.
Everyone who took part in the run was presented with a certificate with four winners also scooping a medal.
There was also a Big Dribble event where participants had to dribble a football up and down the greenway over a distance of 5km, and a football match at the Arbories between Padiham FC ladies and Burnley FC ladies saw a 5-5 draw.
Coun. Ravenscroft said: “It’s always difficult to get people out on a Saturday afternoon but the Mayor’s Mile went really well and the weather was good. I think Padiham Sports Week is a great success. It’s been going for some time and people do participate. It’s something good for the town and people look forward to it. I’d like to thank everybody who took part.”
Padiham Sports Week organiser Mr Alan Smith said the festival had so far been a success and urged Padiham runners of all abilities to turn out for the Five-Mile Jubilee Challenge race tonight (Friday). The event starts at 7pm from the fountain in Memorial Park and people are asked to register at Padiham Football Club from 6pm. The race ends in Whalley Road, next to the traffic lights, and the entry fee is £2.
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees an eight-mile family bike ride along the greenway starting at 10-30am from Padiham Leisure Centre and an FA Cup tie between Padiham FC and Burscough FC at the Arbories. Kick-off is at 3pm.
