TWO hero policemen who tackled a crazed knifeman rampaging through a quiet Burnley village have received a top bravery award.

PC Marc Rigby and PC Ian McGinty were attacked with a knife when they fought to arrest “extremely dangerous” suspect Robert MacKenzie Wilson following an eight-hour police manhunt in Simonstone in 2010.

The fearless pair brought Wilson’s spree of terror to an end and the 39-year-old was later jailed indefinitely for a minimum of seven years.

Now the two firearms officers, from Lancashire Constabulary’s Armed Response Unit, have been honoured with the force’s most prestigious award – the William Garnett Cup.

A special ceremony was held at County Hall in Preston today where the pair were presented with the honour by Deputy Chief Constable Chris Weigh and the acting chairman of the Police Authority, Bruce Jassi.
