A HARD-WORKING Burnley volunteer has been recognised at a prestigious Honours ceremony.

Peter Edward Hughes, who was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, attended a special ceremony at Lancaster Castle, along with five other recipients of the British Empire Medal.

Accompanied by his wife Susan and his family, Peter, a former international referee and past president of Lancashire County Rugby Football Union, was recognised for his services to rugby union football in Lancashire. He was also joined by Malcolm Phillips, past president of the Rugby Football Union, Tim Stirk, president of the England School’s Rugby Football Union, Tony Carroll, from Burnley RUFC and Manchester and District Referees’ Society, and Bill Beaumont, chairman of the Rugby Football Union.

Peter said: “It was a very special day made all the better with so many friends being present.

“I am honoured to receive this award which could just have easily been given to thousands of hard-working volunteers who contribute so much to Rugby Union in Lancashire.

“I am proud to have served the Rugby Football Union, Lancashire County Rugby Football Union, Manchester and District Rugby Union Referees’ Society and Burnley Rugby Union Football Club and hope that I can continue to do so for many years to come.”

Peter became a member of the Calder Vale RUFC committee within a year of moving to Burnley in 1963 – a position that he still holds.

He was fixture secretary for nine years and president of the now named Burnley RUFC for seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11. On the two Saturdays following his investiture, he watched Burnley RUFC first team win their last two matches.

The investiture was carried out by the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Lord Shuttleworth in the Shire Hall.

Talking at the event he said: “This is a very exciting occasion, honouring Lancashire people who have contributed much to their community.”
