A CANALSIDE regeneration project in Burnley has been given a £40,000 boost.

The Whittlefield Canal Project hope to breathe new life into a stretch of the historic Leeds and Liverpool Canal with the cash.

Leaders secured funding to begin transforming the area around the waterway with the help of young people and local residents.

The project will see community workshops – designing artwork for signs and murals, making bird boxes and insect houses.

Wild flower and bulb planting sessions will be held and research will be done to set up information boards.

Young people from the Stepping Stones will also gain qualifications helping carry out physical improvements to pathways and fencing along the canal.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our young people,” said Safeur Khan, support worker at Stepping Stones.

“We’re hoping local residents will get involved too and get to know some of our young people, and with improvements along the canal area it’s a great win-win situation.”

The idea was started by youngsters living at Whittle Court which is supported accommodation provided by Stepping Stones for young people who have nowhere to live.

Whittle Court residents secured a £500 grant from Green Partnership Awards scheme and held a community clean up with more than 50 bags of rubbish collected on the day.

Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Tony Moores and ward councillors Tom Porter, Ida Carmichael and Matthew Isherwood have shared proposals with residents.

The Canal and River Trust and Spa Mill Project have been working together with Proffitts – Investing in Community CIC to secure £40,000 for the Whittlefield Canal Project.

The money for the project has been secured from Lancashire Environmental Fund and from Awards For All and the project is due to start in the spring.

If any residents want to register their involvement they can do so by visiting the web page www.proffittscic.com.
