National Doughnut Week is approaching and I would like to make a special appeal to independent craft bakers, food retailers and coffee shops across the UK to get involved in this fun, annual charity event, which takes place from 11th-18th May, in aid of The Children’s Trust.

I was pleased to read of Sandra Fernandezes’ satisfaction about living here in the Colne Times. I moved to Colne 10 years ago and agree with her as to the friendly helpfulness of the town’s folk and those living in the surrounding villages.

I had the misfortune to break my elbow last week and ended up in the fracture clinic at Burnley General Hospital. To my horror there were ants crawling around the ladies’ toilets.

As someone who loves the countryside around Pendle may I make this plea to farmers and, in particular, those who rent pasture for grazing.

Earlier this month Baroness Thatcher passed away after suffering a stroke. She was just one of the 150,000 people who have a stroke each year in the UK – that’s a shocking one person every five minutes. In fact stroke is the third biggest killer in the UK.

Last year, 173 people were killed and 111,000 were injured in workplaces across the UK. We think just one death is one too many, so these figures are a real concern.

I feel I must respond to your article “MP and Council Leader clash over fund aid” on Friday, April 12th. I did not realise I had clashed with Gordon Birtwistle MP on this issue. What is really going on here is that he is trying to manufacture a story for his political purposes.

Mr Hind (Letters, April 18th) very eloquently states his case for Mrs Thatcher and the continuation of Thatcherism, as practised by that other well known admirer, disciple and some might say war-monger, Tony Blair and the somewhat inferior version of him, now leading the Conservative party, David Cameron.

The lead article on the council tax freeze in the spring edition of Ribble Valley News reads more like a Conservative Party election leaflet than impartial, factual news from the council.

It is saddening to see Whalley Community Hydro plan to launch their shares with such a high entry price of £250. This sum, which must be regarded as risk capital, may be more than many people in the area can spare, resulting in only the “better off” participating.
