TWO stunning second half strikes from Martin Paterson and Steven Thompson earned the Clarets a play-off final tie with Sheffield United at Wembley.
Burnley rode their luck on several occasions and faced a Reading onslaught in the opening 45 minutes at the Madejski Stadium. But a solid defensive display ensured the Clarets went in at half-time with a 1-0 aggregate lead.

Owen Coyle's side were two minutes from reaching a Carling Cup final day at Wembley against Manchester United by two minutes but returned onto the pitch rejuvenated and with the hunger of wanting that prestigious Wembley final.

And it only took six minutes into the second half before Burnley doubled their aggregate advantage. Paterson picked up the ball inside his own half and drove at the Royals' defence before unleashing a superb 32-yard strike with his left foot that beat Hahnemann and sent 2,000 plus Clarets fans into raptures.

Then, just seven minutes later the Clarets effectively killed the game off. A long ball upfield was collected by Thompson who brought the ball down in his stride before striking a magnificent half-volley from the edge of the area which crashed against the underside of the crossbar before bouncing behind the line.

Steve Coppell's side offered very little in the second-half and rarely threatened Brian Jensen's goal. The only efforts of note came from Dave Kitson and Shane Long who both directed their shots into the heavens. Not even the introduction of former Claret Glen Little could inspire the home side who seemed to have accepted defeat.

Young Burnley prodigy Jay Rodriguez almost added a third on the night when he beat Hahnemann to Jensen's long clearance but his effort went agonisingly wide of the post.

But Mike Riley's full-time whistle prompted mass celebration from the vocal Clarets faithful and it will be they who will be travelling to Wembley Stadium on May 25th where they will challenge Kevin Blackwell's Sheffield United side for a place in the Premiership. Let's hope the Clarets can blunt the Blades!

Comparing you against Sheffield Utd from last night I think you're going to be in the Premiership! We didn't turn up until the last twenty minutes at Brammal Lane and didn't deserve to go through, but you do, Good luck

Congratulations on reaching the final.
I thought Readings pedigree might have won through in the end, but theyve continued the terrble run.......

Now for the banter..............
How are you going to sell 37,000 tickets for Wembley when you only get 11,000 at home? Give some to your mates down the road at Blackburn perhaps???

Hello Burnley,
I am an expat living in Norway but born in Wolverhampton and a life-long Wolves fan. Just wanted to say well done to Burnley and sincerely hope you make it to the Premier. As for no 3 just tell him how many Clarets made it to Wembley for the Sherpa Van.....crowd attendance was over 80,000 at the game and an outstanding day. If the clarets need any advice on the blades just remember how they bottled it against us. Half time it was all over. Burnley play decent football unlike the dirty blades. It is about time that Turf Moor was back in the top league as well (I used to visit there with a school friend when I lived in Rochdale as a teenager).....so come the end of the month all they have to do is play their usual game and they will be through....see you next season in the top league....
