Urgent advice to construction firms in bad weather

THE Health & Safety Executive has issued an urgent warning to construction companies to help prevent unnecessary accidents during the severe weather today in the North West.
Mark Cottriall, Principal Construction Inspector for Lancashire and Cumbria, said: "During severe weather like today's, with very strong winds and rain, there is an increased risk of major and fatal accidents, especially for those working outside and at height. Employers and workers need to reassess the increased risks of what they are doing in light of the changed weather conditions. Worker safety is paramount and must come first.
"As well as the increased risk of slipping or falling from height there is also the danger of unsecured items and materials being caught by the wind and moving - potentially putting members of the public at risk. We would urge all those in control of activities affected by the weather to make sure the necessary controls are in place and take a common sense approach to ensuring the safety of their staff and others.
"And the risk does not end with the easing of the weather. Before recommencing work, all scaffolds and working platforms should be inspected by a competent person to ensure their stability has not been compromised by the high winds."
