PRESTON runner Marc Hartley held off defending Grand Prix champion Paul Guinan of Blackburn to win the 28th annual Pinhaw Moor Fell race.

The race, run in perfect conditions, helped attract a strong field of 137 runners, with Hartley winning in a time of 31.01.

Clayton's Andrew Stubbs, a former Grand Prix champion, finished third and was also the first veteran home.

Clayton Harriers almost had a clean sweep of veteran winners, with Mark Aspinall (V45), Mike Wallis (V50), Ross Jaques (V70) and Brian Leathley (V75) all winning their respective categories.

David Tait (Dark Peak) was the only non-Clayton winner in the V60 section.

The only record to be broken in the men's race was in the V70 category, where Jaques took 32 seconds off the previous time.

Brian Leathley failed to improve on the excellent time he set last year, when he didn't receive the credit for taking almost 30 minutes off the previous time.

In the ladies' race Clayton's Sue Burns almost missed the start, but dominated to hold off Trawden's Molly Ralphson with 23 seconds to spare.

She was also the first veteran home. Debbi Wilson (Clayton) was third.

Two records fell in the ladies' race as Jean Rawlinson took a remarkable three minutes 44 seconds off the previous LV55 time, and Kitty Garnett goes from strength to strength, setting a new record of 62.45 in the LV70 category.

The Grand Prix now moves on to the very challenging Hendon Brook race on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.
