JONATHAN Clare was Derbyshire's saviour on day one of their LV County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Derby.
The 21-year-old smashed his maiden first class half-century, top-scoring in the home innings with 66 from 124 balls, with eight fours.

And that contributed to a wagging tail that put on 81 for the eighth wicket with Tom Lungley (50), after Rikki Clarke's side had slumped to 128-7.

Former St Theodores man Clare was last man out after chipping Monde Zondeki to Ian Salisbury at deep mid-on, having survived a dropped catch by the former at cover while on 30.

And his efforts helped the home side recover to 270 all out, with Warwickshire ending day one on 14-0 after seven overs.

However, he has since picked up the key wicket of Darren Maddy on day two, with Warwickshire 122-2 at lunch.

Meanwhile, James Anderson was also in action as Lancashire bounced back in fine style in an action-packed first day at Old Trafford against Durham.

Having been bowled out for 143, with Anderson falling for an eight-ball duck, the "Burnley Express" then took four wickets as the visitors were skittled for 114, as 20 wickets fell on the first day's play.

Anderson removed Mark Stoneman (2), stand-in skipper Michael Di Venuto (8), Paul Collingwood (3) and Phil Mustard (8), ending with figures of 4-31 off 13 overs.

Earlier, both Anderson and Clare were in Friends Provident Trophy action, as their respective counties made a roaring to their North Division campaign.

Clare grabbed three wickets as Derbyshire beat Scotland by six wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method, and grabbed another in a nailbiting one-run success over Durham.

However, Anderson and Lancashire failed to enjoy the best of luck this week, with the former Burnley paceman failing to pick up a wicket in a two-run defeat to Scotland, and taking just one in a five-wicket success against Durham.
