CLUBS from Burnley, Blackburn, Accrington, Leeds and Lincoln came toe-to-toe and fought with tremendous ability during a kickboxing masterclass at Turf Moor.
A capacity crowd saw nine bouts of first class martial arts which consisted of seven under cards and two title fights.
A blistering start from Burnley's Ben Whitehead in the Super Heavy weight bout for the ISAK Northern Area title in Oriental rules with strong hand and leg combinations saw Nick Sheppard take an early eight count. That set the scene for what was to follow as Ben continued the attack for the referee to step in to stop the contest after one minute 55 seconds in the first round. This was a very good win for Ben against a very experienced opponent.
The top bout was for the British Light Middle weight title held by Kevin Beckett from Lincoln and challenged by Jason Curtis from Clayton Le Moors.
The lads had met before when Kevin won the title, so Jason sought revenge which was eagerly anticipated by bthe crowd.
This was nine rounds and it was nine rounds of outstanding kickboxing skills from two athletes. They gave the crowd a display of all the kickboxing techniques with all the kicks in the book linked to excellent hand combinations.
Jason's determination and constant pressure paid dividends as he won on a unanimous points win. He is now lined up to fight in Wales in July against the Commonwealth champion.
In other fights, Burnley's Mel Smith opened the show with a flurry as she beat Jackie Beare; home-town hero Duncan Stewart beat Blackburn fighter Chris Clarkson after a unanimous decision in the three-round fight. The following bouts saw Black Knights' fighters Gaz Bromley and Dave Wilson lose in the fourth and fifth fights respectively despite stirling efforts but a majority decision for Keiron Taylforth saw him take the plaudits over his Burnley counterpart Nathan Walne (Free Fight).
