TWO disgraced Burnley councillors have each been jailed for 18 months for their part in an election fraud scandal that shook the town.
Daneshouse with Stoneyholme councillors Mozaquir Ali and Manzur Hussain had been found guilty of electoral fraud last month after a month-long trial.
And at Preston Crown Court late yesterday afternoon they were condemned for their actions, falsifying proxy vote applications in the June 2004 elections, Burnley's first attempt at an all-postal vote.
Added to their fall from grace, the pair were kicked out of the Liberal Democrat party and dismissed from their positions on Burnley Borough Council.
Judge Andrew Gilbart sent the pair to start their terms behind bars.
Ali, of Brougham Street, and Hussain, of Milner Street, both Liberal Democrat councillors for Daneshouse with Stoneyholme, falsified proxy vote applications, targeting some of the most vulnerable people in Daneshouse in a ruthless bid for Ali to win re-election to the seat he had held since 1995.
Ali and Hussain had both denied the charge of conspiring with others unknown to defraud the returning officer of Burnley Borough Council, Dr Gillian Taylor.
Burnley CID were called in to investigate after council officials suspicions were raised over the number of proxy votes applied for in the ward and a wide-ranging investigation brought the pair to justice.

Don't miss Tuesday's Express for all the reaction.
