THIS is the exclusive first picture of how the controversial new Unity College will look.
The plans for the new crescent-shaped "super school" in Towneley Park went on display this week after a bitter battle between Lancashire County Council and residents.

Mr Stephen Riley, for the county council, said: "We just want to get on site, build the school and get the pupils into what will be a fantastic facility.

"There has been a delay of a year, but we hope to start work in the summer, so the school can officially open in September, 2010. We are confident flooding will not be an issue. Environment Agency guidelines state any new developments built on a flood plain must have improvement work done. Therefore we have created a void of around 1.5m underneath the building."

He said the school would boast a 300-seat theatre. It would also have three outdoor tennis/netball courts, a floodlit all-weather pitch, a four-court sports hall, with fitness room and climbing wall.

If flooding wouldn't be an issue, then why bother leaving a space under the building? Hope swimming lessons are on the curriculum.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that a town with many beautiful abandoned buildings has decided to build 5 new hideous ‘super schools’? Surely someone could have made the connection and solved both these problems in one go.
