A BIZARRE formation of lights over Burnley has left residents baffled.

The strange sight was seen around 10-40 p.m. on Friday.

Landscape manager Mr Phil Hargreaves (49) said he was driving back to Brierfield from Bacup after picking up his 17-year-old son, Jarod.

"Driving down Burnley Road, past the quarry and where the Townley Arms used to be located, you get a great view of Burnley. My son noticed them first, about 15 to 20 lights in the sky, just above the town. I stopped the car and got out for a better look.

"They were single lights, glowing, and were moving slowly upwards towards the clouds. Some appeared to be moving in formation, and one rose up from the ground and joined the others. They seemed to circle for a few minutes, then rose up slowly through the clouds and out of sight.

"The whole experience lasted about five minutes at the most from spotting them to the last light disappearing.

"The lights seemed to be quite large, but it's difficult to say really. The only explanation I could give would be someone setting helium balloons off with lights inside, although that sounds a bit ridiculous itself.

"Whatever they were, I haven't seen anything like them, and my son and I got a bird's eye view right over the town where they were. I am usually a bit sceptical about these things, but I can't explain what I saw adequately."

Mr and Mrs Tom and Elaine Sharples also saw the lights. They were watching television at 10-40 p.m. when Mr Sharples spotted them through the window.

He said: "They appeared in the sky over the rooftop facing our house moving slowly but purposely in a south-westerly to north-easterly direction. There seemed to be 12 or more bright white lights in formation with a few stragglers.

"We often see the lights of aircraft flying over at night, but there were far too many of these lights, close together, to be aircraft. Planes usually have flashing lights and these lights didn't flash.

"My wife and I went outside to watch and I tried to get a closer look with my binoculars but couldn't see them any clearer, we watched for a couple of minutes until they went out of sight behind clouds.

"It was a very unusual sight and unlike anything I've ever seen before."

Paul Smith also said he had seen 15 or 20 dots of light over Worsthorne. The amber lights were travelling silently in a line across the horizon towards Colne.

And John Hewitt said: "My wife and I observed these lights while we were in the car park at McDonald's. Like other people, we saw about 20 lights all moving as if in formation."

For pete's sake, is this town so full of numbskulls that, if there's something they don't understand, it has to be the aliens? I couldn't find my keys this morning; that was the aliens too, prob'ly. They're pretty busy, just now.

My wife and I also saw these lights and as we live overlooking Towneley Park we thought we were watching the end of a firework display from the hall. The lights did not seem to be particularly high off the ground and faded as we watched.

Probably just sky lanterns. Not UFO activity.

The only 'UFO' you're likely to see over Burnley / Lancashire skies is the 'black triangle' and is silent running, suspected to be a stealth aircraft project at RAF Warton.

We also saw the lights on Friday night, they appeared to be coming up from Towneley, we would say that the lights actually dimmed and went out, whoever was responsible did a very good job of making them appear information, it was quite a spectical and fasinating to watch!!!!!!

hiya every body, wel last friday night, my boyfriend was working until midnight so at about 10:35 i went outside to have a fag and i was sat on my chair in the back garden when i saw a bunch of orange blinking lights rise from the what looked like burnley football club. i though they were planes at first but then i though that they were to close to be planes. i didnt no what they were so i wasnt scared but i just watched in amazement while these lights rose above me then seperated in different directions. as soon as the lights dissapeared, i rang my mum up and asked her if she had seen them. the reply i got was no so when my boyfriend arrived home, i told him what i had saw. the only explanation my family could give was the northeren lights so i relied my conclusion on that until i read on fridays burnley express what i had actually saw. i hope this investigated thanks

I was at a celebration last friday at Townley Hall, the occasion was a suprise 60th birthday for a friend of mine. Afret the dinner all the guests were invited to go outside the Hall, when we got there a group of the guests at the party had obtained a number of small hot air ballons. they stood about 1 metre high & when the heat sourse wae lit at the bottom of the balloon they started to rise into the night sky. As the fire regulations would not allow the candles to be lit on the cake it was felt that this would be an unusual way to celebrate. So sorry to put a damper on the fact that aliens have chosen to visit Burnley but it was just a birthday celebration.

Last Friday we saw a MOD aeroform do a figure 8 over Rishton. How do I know it was MOD. Take it I do. The common signal of civilian aerocraft is very common. This wasn't civilian. It was heavy, very powerful and it did a figure 8 (infinity) for over an hour. Trianglular shaped aeroform. Twelve hours later, people see UFO's over Burnley? Mmm... The UK govt released their UFO secrets in April this year and declare a four year programme of disclosure. This takes us towards the date 2012. Wake up!

Discuss.
