BURNLEY played host to more than 50 trainee teachers at a special conference in its groundbreaking faith centre.
The Burnley and Pendle Faith Centre held the "diversity day" for history and religious education students who are doing their Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Trainee teachers are required to have an academic knowledge and understanding of social, religious and cultural diversity in order to meet the Government's requirements for qualified teacher status.
They joined Terry Murnane, community faith co-ordinator at the faith centre, and partners from Burnley Schools' Sixth Form and Building Bridges in Pendle for a full day conference.
During the day, the students learned about teaching in a diverse, multi-cultural society and took part in discussion groups.
They also heard about the work being conducted in local schools at Year 6, 7 and 10 levels, and a presentation by Waqaus Ali of Building Bridges in Pendle.
The Burnley and Pendle Faith Centre, in Heald Road, opened in September 2006 as part of the £250m. Building Schools for the Future scheme and is believed to be the only one of its kind in the country. It will move next door to the new Burnley School's Sixth Form Campus when it opens in September, 2006.
