POLICE in Burnley have issued a warning to young people about the dangers of throwing stones at motorists and have said "people have been killed by this."
The stark message comes after teenage yobs threw stones at a bus in Yorkshire Street yesterday afternoon, causing £1,000-worth of damage.
The Volvo bus, owned by the First Group, was travelling into Burnley from Rochdale at 4-15 p.m. when it was hit. At 4-55 p.m., a black BMW was hit in a separate incident, causing the windscreen to crack.
Police said the vandals were throwing stones from a bridge above Yorkshire Street close to the town centre.
Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Insp. Viki Crorken of Burnley police said: "It is extremely dangerous to do this and people have been killed by it.
"I don't think for one minute that is their intention but they have got to think of the consequences. It could end up with them being charged with a very serious offence which carries a term of imprisonment."
Insp. Crorken said police were now making inquiries and examining CCTV footage
Anyone with information is urged to call Burnley police on 425001.
