NEIGHBOURS living on a busy highway leading into Burnley town centre say that illegal parking is not being clamped down on.
Mr Gordon Cains, of Westgate, says parking on single and double yellow lines in nearby Wiseman Street and Neptune Street, which are narrow highways used by large delivery and commercial vehicles, is being abused.

He added that despite phone calls and letters to Burnley Council nothing has been done to resolve the problem. To make matters worse, he says parking restrictions on a turning circle at the top of Wiseman Street are not being enforced and scrapped cars are left there to be vandalised.

Speaking on behalf of neighbours whose cars have been damaged, Mr Cains said: "There are a number of commercial premises on the two roads, and both delivery vehicles and customers' cars use the roads all week."

He went on: "They not only obstruct the pavement for pedestrians, but present significant problems for access to local premises. In the past three months several residents' cars have been damaged by vehicles manoeuvring to avoid these obstructions."

Mr Cains said the area around the turning circle is used by pedestrians to reach the canal, but scrapped cars parked there are vandalised, leaving broken glass on the ground which has not been cleared.

Burnley Council's Engineering Manager Mr Gordon Leighton said it was working with other agencies to enforce regulations where possible. He said: "We are aware of Mr Cains' complaint and have contacted him directly to explain the situation, and reassure him we are working to resolve this matter.

"The relevant agencies, the Environment Agency, Lancashire County Council and the Streetscene department at Burnley Council, are working closely together to investigate and resolve this problem as quickly as possible."

i don't think double yellow lines mean anything anymore unless there is money to be made out of them. take a drive up to duke bar area of burnley, cars parked over bicycle lanes, on double yellow lines and the pavement.

I thought that double yellow lines meant that it was dangerous or not suitable to park in those areas, with that in mind, even if they stopped the illegal parking of drivers in that area,it would most likely be taken over by burnleys army of "disabled" drivers, who seem to park anywhere with no respect to other peoples safety, its about time the law came prosecuted all forms off illegal and dangerous parking,we wont be silenced!!
