A BURNLEY primary school is celebrating after its Ofsted report yielded top marks.

St John the Baptist RC Primary School, Thames Avenue, was branded a "good school" where pupils enjoy their lessons and achieve above average marks.

The Government report commended most areas within school, highlighting the development and well-being of pupils as "outstanding".

The report said: "Pupils' personal development and well-being, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development are outstanding. Behaviour is excellent and everyone gets on well together.
Above average attendance figures demonstrate how much pupils like school. They are welcoming to visitors and very polite."

Teachers were praised for the way they connect with pupils and the way lessons are planned.

"Teaching and learning are good throughout the school," said the inspector, Mrs Kathleen McArthur. "Good relationships make a big contribution to pupils' learning and teachers provide activities that really capture pupils' attention."

Headteacher Mr Kieran Heakin said: "I am pleased and delighted with the report. We have a good team at St John's and everyone pulls together. The staff are magnificent and the children delightful."

It did NOT achieve top marks. The top grade overall is 'Outstanding'; the school was graded 'Good', the next grade down. It is to be warmly commended for this, but it is disappointing that the very first thing the Burnley Express says in its article is plain wrong. Bottom marks to the newsdesk, then.
