Lib-Dem and Labour victories in by-election

LABOUR and Liberal Democrats were the winners at Thursday's by-election.
It was closely fought battle in Daneshouse with Stoneyholme as Labour's Coun. Shah Monwar Hussain won the seat by 38 votes from Liberal Democrat candidate Mr Mohammed Abdul Malik.

The Brunshaw Ward saw a more comprehensive winning margin with Liberal Democrat's Coun. Allen Harris taking the seat with 875 of the votes.

The British National Party failed to mount a challenge in the Brunshaw Ward, Mr Paul McDevitt polling 538 votes.

BRUNSHAW: Allen Harris (Lib Dem) 875; Paul McDevitt (BNP) 538; Karen Marie Baker (Lab) 479; Tony Coulson (Con) 90. Turnout: 39.9%

DANESHOUSE WITH STONEYHOLME: Shah Monwar Hussain (Lab) 944; Mohammed Abdul Malik (Lib Dem) 906; Steven Smith (EFP) 141; Alan Dean Marsden (Con) 35. Turnout: 52.4%
