FIRE-FIGHTERS were forced to evacuate several houses after an arsonist struck in the Duke Bar area of Burnley.
The firebug started the blaze by setting fire to piles of rubbish in the kitchen of an unoccupied house in Ford Street.

Two engines raced to the scene and used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames before using a fan to clear the premises of smoke.

Four houses in total were evacuated at just after 11 a.m. after the smoke alarm on one of the neighbouring properties had sounded.

Crew manager Roy Edwards said: "This is something that could have put several other people at risk or even severe danger. There was a large amount of rubbish in the building and it is paramount that people understand the dangers of starting fires.

"Luckily one of the neighbours was alerted to the flames by their smoke alarm and they were then able to contact us. It is important that we reiterate the importance of having a properly working smoke alarm in your house because they do save lives."
