THE mother of Nadeem Khan, who died in police custody last June, says the family are "stuck in limbo" as they await an inquest into his death.
Floral tributes have been laid outside Burnley Police Station in memory of the 28-year-old former Barden Junior School and Towneley High School pupil, known to friends as Dean.
One year on, his family and friends say they are still no nearer finding out what happened on the morning of his arrest and his mum, Miss Brenda Smith, said they will not be able to grieve properly until they knew.
"We are all still just about coping to be honest," she said. "It just feels like we are stuck in limbo though."
Miss Smith has been told the inquest into her son's death is likely to take place in January in Lancaster.
She said: "It's been a long time. We've been told it could take as long as 10 days and with it being in Lancaster it's going to be difficult to get there everyday."
The Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation, launched following his death, has finished and reports have been sent to the coroner.
Mr Khan (28), who used to live in Ardwick Street, Burnley, was arrested following a "violent struggle" with police in Halifax Road, Brierfield, early on a Saturday. He was later taken ill at Burnley Police Station and taken to Burnley General Hospital where he died.
Mr Khan had been living in Blackburn where he worked as a property developer. He visited his family and friends, including his daughters, Aleesha (five) and Jasmine (two) in Burnley daily.
