CLARETS hero Andy Payton has denied being involved in drug-taking after being cautioned by police when drugs were found at his house.

Payton (41), known to fans as the "Padiham Predator", received an adult caution from Burnley Police after the raid on Tuesday under the Misuse of Drugs Act. It is reported 17 cannabis plants were seized in the raid.

The former Burnley Football Club striker confirmed police had visited his home but said he "abhorred all types of drugs" and a cannabis joint was found by officers in his house in Mary Towneley Fold, Fulledge. He was not at the property when the raid took place.

Mr Payton said: "I had a few friends round for a party on Saturday night and the cannabis joint must have been left by a friend in my ashtray. I absolutely abhor all types of drugs and don't even smoke."

Burnley Football Club released a statement on Wednesday, which read: "The club maintains a zero tolerance policy towards drugs and expects current employees, especially players who are seen as role models, to set and uphold high moral standards, both in public society and in private.

"However, the person in question is not employed by Burnley Football Club and this is therefore a matter for the police."
