A TRAWDEN woman has spoken of her disgust at an international fast food outlet choosing to serve only halal meat at its Colne premises.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, joins a growing number of objectors on Facebook, where more than 1,500 have supported the group "No Halal at Colne KFC".

The store, on North Valley Retail Park, is one of 74 KFC outlets nationwide to be chosen for a halal trial. Those in Burnley, Accrington and Blackburn are also taking part in the trial.

On its website, KFC states: "For some time, we have received requests to provide halal food in parts of the UK, and as a result of this we are running a halal trial within communities where we anticipate a strong demand for halal products."

For the chicken to be halal accredited, the animal is stunned and a verse recited from the Qur'an at the point of slaughter.

But for the restaurant to be certified halal, all products served there have to be halal, which takes away people's choice, claims the Trawden resident.

She said: "I think to have halal forced on us and to not have a choice is wrong. They are saying the food is blessed, but that is not my religion.

"They have also taken out all their pork and bacon products, as it is against Islam to eat pig. Surely this is discriminating against people who do eat pig in this country.

"There are animal rights in this country which people fought long and hard for. I am not racist, but I strongly object to this being forced on us."

However, Nina Arnott, a KFC spokesman, said the company was working closely with animal welfare organisations to ensure it keeps standards high.

She added: "We are sorry this customer feels worried, but would like to reassure her we are still using exactly the same ingredients and exactly the same great tasting chicken as before, while also working closely with animal welfare organisations to ensure we remain committed to our same high standards of animal welfare.

"For some time, we have had requests to provide halal food in some parts of the UK, and in Colne the restaurant is one of those taking part in our trial."

KFC says the trial will involve evaluating customer feedback and the commercial success of the trial to establish if it is something it will continue with.

I am beginning to think I am no longer in the real world and all this is just a very bad dream, how dare they add fuel to the fire! We no longer have Great Britain we no long have Nativity Plays we no longer have a school menu for our kids we no longer have any rights to speak out without being called racist we are not racist we are just sick and tired of our politicians giving away our lives as we know it, we want our country back to being British and anyone coming into our country respecting and accepting us!! The British would not dream of expecting any chosen adopted country to start changing everything for us after all isn't that why you move to another place or country because you like what you see or hear of it. I think KFC should drop this trial period now before they stir up anymore trouble and since when have you seen the Islamic community using KFC, I haven't. One angry ex KFC customer.

There is a simple answer, just vote with your feet. Don't go there and see if they can survive just serving a minority section of the public.

Just a minute guys. I'm muslim and i eat halal meat. For years i've wanted to go to a fast food outlet like KFC and others such as Mcdonalds, Burger King and cannot buy any products apart frpm fries, and a vege burger because they do not provide halal products. I feel that we have been discriminated against right from the beginning yet i haven't made a big fuss before. I'm so prod of KFC-as they have taken this step knowing very well that there are many people out there who cannot buy from fast food outlets because the meat is not suitable. Just think for a minute, your children probably go to these outlets quite often, my son is so excited about happy meals and the likes of it, however can never have one because the meat/chicken is prohibited. This is only a trail, so folks let us have a taste for a short time. Thanks

PLUS YOU HAVE THE CHOICE TO BUY ELSEWHERE UNTIL THE TRIAL COMES TO AN END-WE DON'T HAVE THAT OPTION. SO HOLD THE PEACE. AND STOP GOING ON ABOUT DISCRIMINATION-WHY DO YOU MAKE A BIG AGENDA OF EVERYTHING. You make it out that we are driving you away but your doing that yourdelves by making comments on everything that happens. GET A LIFE PEOPLE-THERE IS BETTER THINGS TO THINK ABOUT!!!!

KFC is yet another business that needs to be boycotted across the country.
As a customer I refuse to support any business that sells halal meat as I do not agree with the principal. KFC say that this is a trial , so why do they not advertise the fact openly about this at their store. Following a recent visit there I am absolutely disgusted that I have been sold a product I simply do not want.
My patience has run out ! ! !

Do any of you morons know anything about halal meat? Do you think animals that are slaughtered in a non-halal way suffer less? You need to check your facts before spouting your ignorant comments. Chicken is chicken, unless your a practicing muslim and then you'd want it to be halal. If you're not muslim it makes no difference.

Saima1, are you so stupid you can't see that you are contradicting yourself. You say you wouldn't eat food killed in a non halal way yet you think it is perfectly acceptable for non muslims to eat halal meat. In a democracy the views of the majority are supposidly represented. Muslims are not the majority so why should we be expected to have your religious views inflicted on us. Roll on May and lets vote in some common sense!
