ALMOST 60% of children in Burnley are living in low income families – new figures from the Campaign to End Child Poverty.
All parliamentary constituencies were assessed to look at levels of child poverty with the highest at 81% and the lowest is 17%.
Burnley is joint 67th in the table with Pendle and Preston as well as Rotherham, Glasgow North West, Peterborough, Huddersfield and Kingston-upon-Hull East – all of which have 58% of children living in low income families.
The worst area in the county was Blackburn, where 67% of children live in low income families, closely followed by Oldham West and Royton, Rochdale, Bolton South East and Blackpool South.
Low income is where no one is working more than 16 hours a week or the family is receiving the full amount of working tax credit.
The campaigner say the figures are not a direct measure of exactly how many children are in poverty, but is a good indicator of areas with very high child poverty levels.
The information comes a week after Prime Minister Gordon Brown, speaking at the Labour Party conference, pledged to end child poverty by 2012.
