A DAMNING unanimous vote fo no confidence in hospital bosses has been taken by councillors.
The vote, taken at last night's meeting of Burnley Borough Council, is yet another blow to the board of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust which has suffered a public backlash since it stripped Burnley General Hospital of its accident and emergency department.

The motion, which was put forward by Coun. Darren Reynolds, called on members to support a no confidence vote and to urge the Secretary of State for Health to set up an independent review into how the vital services could be restored in Burnley.

Coun. Reynolds has also sent a dossier, containing damning statements from both patients and despairing staff members and managers, to Trust chiefs.

To read a full report of the highly-charged debate, pick up a copy of tomorrow's Burnley Express.

Cllr Darren Reynolds,

Proposing this motion was at once the most difficult and most obvious step I have taken since becoming a Burnley councillor.

It was difficult because the reputations of the Trust board are now officially impugned. There are many good things about our NHS, and there is more that is good about our local service than is bad. But the board has made a mess of the Meeting Patients Needs programme. It was flawed in design, and the implementation has been botched.

Yet the motion was the obvious thing to do because the support our campaign has received has been overwhelming. There can be no doubt that the people of Burnley feel very strongly about how they have been treated in respect of the hospital, and as their elected representative, it's my job - and that of my political colleagues - to defend our town. On behalf of the people of Burnley, we demand that the Trust gives us our hospital back.
