OWEN Coyle is taking an extended look at Latvian Under 21 winger Aleksandrs Solovjovs.
The 20-year-old Olimps Riga wide man has impressed the Clarets boss since linking up with the squad at the start of the week, and Coyle is keen to add the talented left-sided player to his six summer captures - providing the deal is right.

Solovjovs played 56 minutes at Glentoran on Monday, having initially been expected to link up with the squad last weekend, and he shone in his 81 minutes at Bradford on Wednesday, playing on the left flank and, later in the game, centrally.

The youngster has previously trained with Chelsea, and attracted interest from Mark Hughes, before he left Blackburn Rovers for Manchester City, and UEFA Cup holders Zenit St Petersburg, but Solovjovs is thought to prefer a move to England, and Coyle is keen to make that happen.

Rival Championship scouts were in the stand at Valley Parade on Wednesday, with Sheffield United believed to be interested, but Coyle said on Thursday: "We're going to look at him for the next couple of days or so.

"He trained again today, and will train on Friday, and we'll have a look at it from there.

"He's done well in the time we've seen him, and, to be fair, there's probably interest from other sides, I would imagine.

"But we'll take stock after the next couple of days.

"There would be sums involved, and we have budgets to adhere to, so we will find out what is involved, down to the last penny, if we feel he is the right type of player to take us forward."

After Solovjovs impressed at Bradford, Coyle said: "It would be totally remiss of me just now to say there's a hard and fast decision, but we like what we've seen and we'll take it from there.

"I think the fans like what they've seen, so we'll take that on board and see where we go.

"What we have to remember, Aleksandrs is contracted to his club back home, so first and foremost we must speak to them and be very respectful of that.

"We'll find out what the situation is.

"Anyone who's seen those games has seen he's a young talent, he's got a few attributes in his locker and I think he will only get better.

"He's got pace and seemed to have a very good game awareness, which I'm always looking for.

"So we'll take stock of it.

"We'll weigh everything up and speak to all the parties involved and see where that takes us."

Should Solovjovs complete a move, and give Coyle the out-and-out left winger he has craved, he is still looking to strengthen his squad further before the start of the season – and there could be movement the other way: "Brendan (Flood) and the chairman won't thank me for saying this, but I'd love to still be adding another couple to what we've got.

"Any manager will tell you that, but we obviously have to take into consideration there are books to be balanced and everything else that goes with that.

"We'll certainly try to show due diligence on that and do the very best we can to bring that in under our budget.

"I know in my mind where I want to strengthen the team. There are a couple of places where I would like to add fierce competition.
"Whether that comes to fruition before the start of the season, then we'll see.

"It might involve juggling a few balls. There might be one or two who we think aren't going to play week in, week out, and if there's interest in them, then that's something we have to look at, but at this moment in time we'll work hard with what we've got."

Loan signings remain an option, having already made significant outlays over the summer, and he added: "It's always an avenue that's open to us, and I've made a few calls in that respect.
"We'll see whether anything bears fruit on that one."

One line of enquiry that seems to have closed is Hearts winger Andrew Driver, after the 20-year-old signed a new five-year deal at Tynecastle on Wednesday.

Driver said: "We've been negotiating for a while, and now I just want to get on the pitch and show the people who had faith in me that I am worth it.

"Hopefully it shows I am doing something right.
"It is all about improvement now. I can settle down and not worry about anything else.

"It takes out the transfer rumours and now I can concentrate 100% on improving my game and giving 100% for Hearts."
