SKIPPER Steve Caldwell helped Burnley win their fourth successive game at Bradford on Wednesday with the equaliser.
But he admits he would trade that run of victories now for three points at Hillsborough in the seasonal opener a week on Saturday.

After losing to Cary Railhawks in their first game, Burnley have beaten Minnesota Thunder, Partick Thistle, St Johnstone, Accrington Stanley and Bradford – with a draw at Queen of the South to kick off the Scottish tour.

And with Inverness Caledonian Thistle the visitors at Turf Moor on Saturday, Owen Coyle's side are out for five on the spin, but Caldwell said: "We're not kidding ourselves, we've got a wee bit to go before we're ready for the season, and it's just pleasing to be winning games.

"We kept plugging away at Bradford, and I felt our fitness showed in the second half, especially the last 15 minutes, and it's great to get a win.

"It gets you in that habit, but obviously we would swap all the wins for one on August 9th."

Caldwell was the 12th Clarets goalscorer of pre-season – a list later extended to 13 by Steve Jones' last-gasp winner – but although the captain enjoyed getting on the scoresheet, he is eager to add to the three clean sheets already earned: "I was pleased to get a goal, it was a good ball from Blakey – he puts in some great deliveries, and the big guy marking me got under the ball and I hit the target and thankfully it sneaked in at the far post.

"It's good people are sharing the goals out, but I'm happy to keep clean sheets and let the lads up front get the goals."

It remains a testing task to name the starting XI for that first game at Sheffield Wednesday, and Caldwell feels the whole squad have benefitted from competition for places: "The whole point in competition is it brings out the best in people, and it seems to be working.

"The lads have had an even run to show the manager they should be in the team, and everybody looks fit and raring to go.

"I personally feel great, I feel fit and strong, and the game before the start of the season is always a very important one to get yourself really ready for the first match.

"We're looking forward to playing at home, and although it's a pre-season friendly, it will be a tough game, and we need to up our level again."

Chris Eagles is expected to make his debut after landing from Manchester United on Tuesday, and Caldwell is excited at the prospect of playing alongside the 22-year-old: "That was absolutely brilliant news. We've not all been introduced to him yet, but we've all seen him, and we'll get used to his training and his play.

"He's got a lot of qualities, played at the biggest club in the world and he's certainly going to improve our squad and make us stronger for the coming season.

"We're looking forward to seeing him.

"I'm sure he was a sought-after player, he's got a lot of qualities and I'm sure there were many teams in the Championship and probably Premier League who wanted him.

"It's great we've got him, and I'm sure he'll settle in great because we've got a brilliant bunch of lads.
"He'll be made very welcome and his quality will be great for us."
