AS he looks to bolster his squad, Owen Coyle has seen one or two avenues closed to him.
But he remains hopeful of bringing in new faces ahead of the trip to Crystal Palace tomorrow, and certainly before the transfer window closes at midnight a week on Monday.
Coyle has been linked with moves for three centre backs – Derby's Dean Leacock, Sunderland's Russell Anderson and Middlesbrough's Rhys Williams – as well as Leicester targetman Steve Howard.
And he admitted: "I've chased a few things up in terms of loans, and been thwarted in one or two areas, but we'll continue and do our best to get somebody in.
"If you go into the Premier League, in terms of salaries there's only so much you can pay, and players have to want to come out of the Premier League to play in the Championship.
"It's not as simple as picking the phone up and saying 'I want him' and it happens.
"Finance will probably play the biggest part of it.
"We would be looking for a loan with a view to buy, and we have to ensure if it came to buying, we have the right funding in place to do that."
"We'll continue trying and see if anything happens before the weekend.
However, as far as former Fulham defender Leacock is concerned, the retirement of Coyle's former Bolton teammate Alan Stubbs at Pride Park would appear to have scuppered the possibility of a potential move, with Preston and Coventry also linked with the 24-year-old:
"Leacock is a very good player, but I think with Stubbsy retiring, I would think that would curtail any interest anybody has in him, whether we were in for him or not.
"But you're never off that phone, and we'll see what comes of it."
And Coyle clarified keeper Gabor Kiraly's situation at the club.
The Hungarian international was made available for transfer at the end of last season, and Coyle confirmed he will be able to leave the club on a free transfer: "I've spoken to Gabor a few times and said if he can go and play somewhere, we'll do that.
"He's obviously had a great career, and at the age he's at, he'll be wanting to play games.
"He knows he's not going to play here at the moment, and if something comes up, he would be free to leave.
"We'll wait and see what comes."
Forward Steve Jones is also rumoured to be interesting former Clarets boss Stan Ternent at Huddersfield Town.
