POLICE in Burnley are appealing for witnesses after a speed camera in Briercliffe Road at the junction of Towneley Street was set alight earlier this week causing £35,000-worth of damage.
The camera lens was smashed and the camera itself set alight between 2-35 a.m. and 2-40 a.m. on Tuesday.
Police say the film inside the camera, however, wasn't destroyed and is being examined for clues. The camera itself has also been forensically examined by Crime Scene Investigators.
Police believe there may have been a number of witnesses to the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
They are particularly keen to identify a suspected offender described as a white man, 5ft.7in. tall and of stocky build. He is believed to have been wearing a black woolly hat and blue overalls.
PC Andy Kent said: "Love them or hate them, speed cameras are there to help reduce road casualties and ultimately save lives. Damage won't be tolerated. I am appealing for anyone with information to come forward at the earliest opportunity."
